01 — Where it started
In 2017, State Senator Ray Lesniak was running for governor of New Jersey in a crowded field. Voters were saturated with ads and tuned out of traditional campaign events. The campaign needed real conversations, and it needed them statewide.
02 — What was really going on
A town hall works because people get to ask their own question. The format was never the problem. The commute was, and the schedule, and the feeling that politics happens somewhere else.
03 — What I did
- 01
Moved the room online. Chose Facebook Live for its reach among New Jersey voters and its built-in live Q&A: a virtual town hall with no travel and no ticket.
- 02
Promoted it in phases. Teaser videos on the Senator’s positions, simple posts on how to take part, and targeted ads to build the audience before going live.
- 03
Kept it human. Creative shot in real places like a local restaurant, signaling an unscripted conversation rather than a staged speech.
04 — The call that mattered
Framing the invitation as a question. “What would you ask?” instead of “come hear me speak.” Two-way beats one-way.
05 — What changed
- The town hall promo video reached 16,781 people and drew 12K views.
- Hundreds of questions and comments submitted in the live chat.
- Visible grassroots engagement that positioned the Senator as accessible and responsive.
06 — What I'd tell you
If you want people to show up, give them something to say, not just something to hear.
The receipts
The campaign creative.
